DJ Schmutz

After logging tens of thousands of hours in mining operations and supporting more than 3,500 clients, DJ Schmutz serves as the President and Co-Founder of MSHA Safety Services. His career journey began as an Industrial Hygienist, where he developed a deep understanding of miner health, exposure risks, and the realities of safety in both surface and underground environments. Along the way, DJ built experience across major mining operations, working closely with crews, leadership teams, and MSHA inspectors while earning degrees in Industrial Hygiene and Biology, followed by a master’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health.

That path ultimately shaped the mission behind MSHA Safety Services. As the company’s lead consultant and Industrial Hygiene expert, DJ works directly with mine operators to deliver engaging training, strengthen compliance efforts, and address critical health concerns such as silica exposure. He is a vocal advocate for the mining industry and is known for speaking up when evolving safety standards risk creating unintended consequences for mine operators and crews. DJ is also a published author, sharing practical insight drawn from years in the field. Despite the demands of leading a growing business, DJ remains deeply committed to his role at home. Together with his wife Rachel and their six children, he continues to build both a company and a life centered on protecting people and supporting the mining community.
